Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (809,440 ha) offers a great variety of landscapes. From vast expanses of highland plains to savannas and forests, but is mainly known for the Ngorongoro Crater. Once an impressive volcano, now an ancient natural wonder. The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest un-flooded and unbroken caldera in the world. Its size is about 20kms across and its walls reach a dept of 600 meters. Protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ngorongoro Crater is one of East Africa’s most breath-taking wildlife-viewing destinations and a must-stop on any Tanzania safari. The crater walls act as a natural enclosure for myriad species, including the “Big 5”, Grant’s zebra, and East African wild dogs, not to mention black rhinoceros.
The mineral-rich floor of this spectacular bowl is largely flat, open, and covered in nutritious grasses – much to the liking of large herds of zebra and wildebeest. The open plains are home to herds of buffalo, Thomson's gazelle, Grant's gazelle, and tsessebe. Cheetah move in and out of the Crater and leopards are most often encountered in the spectacular Lerai Forest.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Ngorongoro Crater can be visited year-round. Usually, the best time to travel is based on one’s personal preferences. If great weather is preferred, the best time to visit Ngorongoro is considered to be from January to February or from June through September.
