Kilimanjaro Porters
Kilimanjaro Porters
Our Kilimanjaro porters are the lifeline up the mountain. Without the dedicated efforts of our hard-working porters, Mt. Kilimanjaro would just be a pretty picture postcard in the distance. It’s a big job keeping the trek comfortable and well-supplied.
You may not realize it, but for a group of ten climbers, there are over 50 crew members working in front and behind the scenes to ensure success.
Since our beginnings, Enduimet Adventure Safaris has made it our mission to treat our mountain crews with dignity and raise their living standards. Our crews are well-fed, just like our guests. Conditions on Kili can be challenging – we make sure our porters are equipped with the proper clothing, gear, and comfortable tents. We guarantee everyone receives their full pay, even if they must descend early due to illness or injury.
We even look beyond the mountain to make sure our dedicated teams have reliable transportation to and from the mountain. The porters come from the surrounding area around Kilimanjaro. Many come from poor homes. They rely on the gruelling job of being a porter to feed their families.
Furthermore, despite what you might think when you watch them, they are not indestructible and several die every year on Kilimanjaro. Most of the time it is from exposure due to their lack of adequate clothing. This problem is mostly caused by the budget operators.
